What is Migration?

Migration is the conversion of information form one format into another.

For PIM this means the conversion of Centralised Product Information in MS Word to PIM Data Exchange Standard (DES) format XML.

To prepare for future migration MAHs can begin to review the current MS Word documents to identify any inconsistencies in the product information or harmonisations required where differences have accidentally been included in the text.

Migration will be co-ordinated by the EMA and MAHs will negotiate time periods in which to carry out the migration activities, similar to the PALC process for reviewing translations for accession.  Timelines and process for booking slots will be made available well in advance of the first migrations.

The migration will be carried out using a phased approach, allowing MAHs appropriate time to put in place the necessary internal procedural and technical changes to allow ongoing maintenance of the migrated information in PIM format.

The technical migration from Word to XML can be done by either MAHs (or a 3rd party) or the EMA.

For EMA-led migrations MAHs will be expected to perform quality review of the documents pre and post migration.

The latest version of the PIM Data Exchange Standard (DES) should always be used to initiate a migration.

For more general information about PIM please see What is PIM and read the PIM Concepts document.
For more information about the XML Data Exchange Standard please see the Data Exchange Standard page.

Migration Topics

MAH Readiness
We would like to understand the readiness of MAHs to work with PIM and will be sending out a survey to collect information about readiness to begin working with PIM in the near future.
Proof of Concept
The PIM Data Migration Team is currently conducting Proof of Concepts (PoCs) for migration. The PoC will test the process and documentation required to support an efficient process outputting high quality data.  After completion of the PoC more detailed information will be provided and a revision of the guidance will be published.
